The story of San Francisco is actually a series of events and movements. The gold rush, the earthquake, the Beats and the Hippies, gay liberation and the dot-com revolution – these are the things that have shaped the first city we will call home.

Mid-Market, between Powell and Polk, was once a bustling thoroughfare – a lively theatre and shopping district at the center of all the action. Although it fell on hard times in the latter half of the 20th century, this particularly vibrant stretch of San Francisco is more than ready for its renaissance.

The Building

A witness to the changing fortunes of the Mid-Market area, from its theatre district heyday to its current revival, the future home of San Francisco Proper has lived many lives since it was first built in 1907.

The Building

We are undergoing an extensive renovation of our beloved 'flat-iron' building, restoring it to the pure and elegant character of times past while adding in many new amenities that cater to today's well-heeled traveler.

The Building

When it opens in late 2017, the 131-room San Francisco Proper Hotel will stand out as a beacon at the corners of Market and McAllister Street. A historic lobby. Three restaurants on the ground floor. And the Hotel's crown jewel: An indoor/outdoor rooftop restaurant and bar with panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline.

A textbook city pied-à-terre: each of our 131 rooms is a private respite just seconds above the scene. Kelly Wearstler’s one-of-a-kind mix of art and materials connects the modern, residential comforts of downtown living with old-school French and Italian sensibility--as if every last detail were carefully handpicked ages ago.
