We met up with LA-based Interior Designer & Stylist, Emily Henderson during her most recent stay at San Francisco Proper and asked her 8 questions about her philosophy when it comes to design and what how she juggles her day-to-day life. These are #ProperStories.

What do you do for a living?

Interior Designer and Stylist, Target Home Spokesperson, New York Times best selling author of Styled and creator/writer of the daily style blog,

What does a normal day look like for you?

Every day and week is different, certainly, but I’m always writing, always shopping/styling and always thinking about social media and staying innovative. My job is to create compelling digital content in the home and style world, both for companies, clients and our own personal projects. It means that we are constantly brainstorming, creating, producing and amplifying original work – and we have to move FAST.

Who inspires your creativity the most and why?

To be honest it really comes from everywhere so rather than asking where I get the most the better question is about how I design and my philosophy when it comes to design. I’ve often said, “Perfection is boring, let’s get weird”. Now, I know that isn’t exactly a philosophy, but designing a room is all about finding the juxtaposition between expected and unexpected and working with your client to find out what works and doesn’t work for them to further bring that out in their space. I think you should ask yourself how you want the space to feel first, look second and always remember that you are the most important part your home therefore make it personal, even while you are trying to pull it together and have it look cohesive and professional.

As you travel a lot, what are your top 3 ‘must haves’ when traveling?

A good neck pillow, quality luggage, and an awesome book(s).

What is your favorite social media platform?

I am always using instagram not only as a place to post my own work but to be inspired by others. Being in the digital age really allows us to tap into some of the best designs/designers as they create so I really enjoy how much inspiration and interaction I can get from that social platform.

What are your top 3 destinations in the world?

I really want to go to Laos, Morocco and Cuba.

What are you currently listening to on your playlist?

La La Land soundtrack, Fleet Foxes and Alexa’s ‘happy folk’ music recommendations.

What is your favorite thing to do in your hotel room?

Room service, catching up on TV and sleep!

Be sure to follow along Emily on Instagram and find out about her latest design projects and daily style inspo.

What is Proper?

Proper began as a feeling, not as an idea. The feeling was something akin to empathy; an acute awareness that despite the current proliferation of “boutique” and “lifestyle” hotels and residences, there were precious few properties designed for and around today’s global creative nomad. Many in our milieu share the same daunting challenge: staying fresh and focused, energized and inspired—all whilst bouncing between London and Hollywood and Austin and San Francisco and Portland and back again. For them, intuitive service is a given. Mere table stakes. What they need and seek beyond accommodation, even at its most luxurious, is an inspiration. From the elevated and often surprising interiors imagined by Kelly Wearstler. From the sense of immersion in, and connection to, the vibrancy of the local culture. From the highly curated amenities. From the inspired collaborations with the city’s best and most innovative chefs and mixologists. From music and art. From every detail, every interaction, every moment. This is only Proper. And no one else.
