Proper Eats

LA is a foodie’s culinary paradise. From sushi to sweets, health conscience to ethnically diverse, date-approved to late night munchies, there is something to feed your every craving.

Cactus Taqueria

This family-owned, no frills, Mexican food cult favorite is housed within a modest hut in deep Hollywood and offers the best of both worlds: one of the best breakfast burritos in the city AND the greatest late night bites (open til 3 AM on weekends!). Don’t forget to adorn the very delicious pastor tacos with an impressively loaded salsa cart.

Sweetgreen

Three Georgetown undergrads opened a single farm-to-table salad shop in 2007 and man, did they get it right. Now, the hip Washington-based chain boasts 31 stores nationwide and counting. What is simply the coolest salad bar around also sources its fresh produce from local and organic farmers. What’s good for you is also just plain really good.

You can’t hide for long from Kywang Uh’s unmarked Hollywood gem. Tucked away inside an understated strip-mall, its cozy seating, simplistic décor and 7-dish chalkboard menu offers intricate and inventive items marrying Kwang’s authentic Korean heritage with local Cali produce (i.e. greens from Kwang’s own garden!). The Kimchi fried rice with fermented pineapple is not to be missed.

Sugarfish

The hype is real. As far as sushi goes, LA has it beat and Sugarfish takes top prize. For those times you’d rather not make a decision for yourself, their famous specialty “Trust Me” is the way to go. The tuna sashimi, sushi and handrolls look more like beautiful colored gems than something to eat, not to mention the warm rice and buttery fish just melts in your mouth. For the super hungry, give the Nozawa a try!

What is Proper?

Proper began as a feeling, not as an idea. The feeling was something akin to empathy; an acute awareness that despite the current proliferation of “boutique” and “lifestyle” hotels and residences, there were precious few properties designed for and around today’s global creative nomad. Many in our milieu share the same daunting challenge: staying fresh and focused,
energized and inspired—all whilst bouncing between London and Hollywood and Austin and San Francisco and Portland and back again. For them, intuitive service is a given. Mere table stakes. What they need and seek beyond accommodation, even at its most luxurious, is inspiration. From the elevated and often surprising interiors imagined by Kelly Wearstler. From the sense of immersion in, and connection to, the vibrancy of the local culture. From the highly curated amenities. From the inspired collaborations with the city’s best and most innovative chefs and mixologists. From the music and the art. From every detail, every interaction, every moment. This is only Proper. And no one else.
