We sat down with SF-based blogger/influencer & photographer Madeline Lu during her most recent stay at San Francisco Proper and chatted about how she balances her busy travel schedule with family life.

Where do you live and what do you do for a living?

I have been living in San Francisco Bay in California for almost two years now. Before that, I have lived in Germany, Switzerland, UK, Canada and China. I am a blogger/influencer and photographer.

What does a normal day look like for you?

Well, there are two kinds of normal days for me. One when I am at home and the other when I am traveling. When I am home, my day is mixed with work (editing photos from the trips, answering emails, and planning next trips) and family activities. When I am traveling, my day starts with watching and shooting the sunrise, followed by breakfast, exploring the areas and then shooting sunset. Sometimes, when the night is really clear, I might go out to take shot of the night views and milky way.

As you travel a lot, what are your top 3 ‘must haves’ when traveling?

Canon Camera, Master and Dynamic Headphones and Away Luggage

We heard that you dine out a lot, mostly for specific clients you’re working with. Can you describe the most over-the-top dining experience you ever had in the world and where it was?

Because of my job, I have dined in a various amazing places. But the most over-the-top experience was in Mexico, in Le Chique. The presentation of the dishes and the uniqueness of the local ingredients were just mind-blowing. There was just one surprise after another and our senses were constantly stimulated.

As you know, print advertising is on the decline. With that being said, where do you see influencer marketing heading towards in the future?

I see brands to do more long-term social collaborations instead of one-off social campaigns. Just like the way they endorse the professional athletes, companies and brands will pick specific influencers to endorse their products and services and work with them over months, maybe even years. So the audience really sees how the products and services have impact this particular influencer’s life.

What is your favorite social media platform?

My blog, Instagram and Pinterest.

What are you currently listening to on your playlist?

All the songs from Ed Sheeran and The Fat Rat

Lastly, what is your favorite thing to do in your hotel room?

F***. By that, I mean food, of course. 😉 I love, love, LOVE having breakfast in my room, especially when the room has an amazing view.

What is Proper?

Proper began as a feeling, not as an idea. The feeling was something akin to empathy; an acute awareness that despite the current proliferation of “boutique” and “lifestyle” hotels and residences, there were precious few properties designed for and around today’s global creative nomad. Many in our milieu share the same daunting challenge: staying fresh and focused, energized and inspired—all whilst bouncing between London and Hollywood and Austin and San Francisco and Portland and back again. For them, intuitive service is a given. Mere table stakes. What they need and seek beyond accommodation, even at its most luxurious, is an inspiration. From the elevated and often surprising interiors imagined by Kelly Wearstler. From the sense of immersion in, and connection to, the vibrancy of the local culture. From the highly curated amenities. From the inspired collaborations with the city’s best and most innovative chefs and mixologists. From music and art. From every detail, every interaction, every moment. This is only Proper. And no one else.
