America’s great majestic mammal the bison has found a home in Golden Gate Park since naturalists penned a herd here in 1891. The original paddock was part of a breeding program intended to bring the species back from the brink of extinction. The modern iteration was rebuilt under Mayor Feinstein in 1980s.
