Postcard-perfect views, inside and out, are reason enough to linger all day in our Modernist-inspired rooms and exuberant suites, all outfitted with amenities like walk-in rainshowers, Aesop bath products, and an intoxicating assemblage of painterly wallcoverings. Finely attuned to the demands of city travel, our most obsessive attention, however, is to wellness, connective ease and curating a cloud of a bed for a proper night’s rest.

Deluxe Queen/King

Deluxe Queen and King rooms pamper guests with all the thoughtful detailing and extras of an intimate urban hideaway, from gorgeous imported bedding for restful sleep to ambient lighting for striking the right mood. A bold juxtaposition of painterly wallcoverings adds sophisticated dimension in creams and darks, brass, bronze, and gray. There’s a comfortable chair for leisurely daydreaming, too.

rooms list

Premier Double Double

Intended for workmates, families or friend getaways, this handsomely appointed room is outfitted with two double beds and can accommodate up to four people. It’s hard not to feel at home–a sophisticated, Kelly Wearstler-designed home–against the highly Instagrammable assemblage of bold wallpapers: period florals, cool tessellations, and sketched geometries. The windows of these rooms are new and soundproofed to keep out the noise.

rooms list

Premier King

The Premier King fares well for days and nights of comfortable, private retreat. A separate sitting area is accented with geometric motifs like Secessionist-inspired textiles and oversized ’50s French/Italian style furnishings and lamps. A bold juxtaposition of painterly wallcoverings adds sophisticated dimension in creams and darks, brass, bronze, and gray.

rooms list

Junior Suite

Featuring one-third more square footage to live and work than the Premier King, this 374-square-foot king bed suite is a private corner of handsome design. Acoustically treated for supreme quiet, two original windows frame a cityline view. At night, comfortably tucked into a settee while city lights are ablaze, the feel is especially restful.

Premier Suite

Confident, artful, with strong floral wallcoverings and designed with company in mind, the premier suites, 550 square feet each, are where to stay when you need a separation of space for an office, living room, or temporary headquarters. In addition to the design, the views beyond are an impressive sight: a cinematic straightaway down Market Street with the Ferry Building in the distance.

rooms list

Bunk Room

Proper set out to translate the efficiency of the bunk bed with newfound sophistication, comfort, and privacy. Kelly Wearstler’s result is a fort-like encasement of handsome ribbed walnut with a brass ladder to the top. To complete the tailored living space, each cloud-like sleeping area is self-sufficient in design with outlets, USB ports, and a private TVs with headphones. Ample storage keeps luggage and clothing out of sight and neat.

What is Proper?

Proper began as a feeling, not as an idea. The feeling was something akin to empathy; an acute awareness that despite the current proliferation of “boutique” and “lifestyle” hotels and residences, there were precious few properties designed for and around today’s global creative nomad. Many in our milieu share the same daunting challenge: staying fresh and focused,
energized and inspired—all whilst bouncing between London and Hollywood and Austin and San Francisco and Portland and back again. For them, intuitive service is a given. Mere table stakes. What they need and seek beyond accommodation, even at its most luxurious, is inspiration. From the elevated and often surprising interiors imagined by Kelly Wearstler. From the sense of immersion in, and connection to, the vibrancy of the local culture. From the highly curated amenities. From the inspired collaborations with the city’s best and most innovative chefs and mixologists. From the music and the art. From every detail, every interaction, every moment. This is only Proper. And no one else.
